A Walking Guide to Mill Street, Grass Valley

If you are visiting Grass Valley, Mill Street is where most of your wandering is going to happen. It is the main pedestrian street of historic downtown, lined with brick buildings from the late 1800s, restaurants, shops, art galleries, and small businesses that have been around for decades. Our shop sits in the middle of it, so we know this street well. This is the local guide we wish someone had given us when we first moved here.

We are James and Deborah, and we have run Crystal Empire Gems at 139 Mill Street since 2015. Our two boys grew up running these blocks. This is what we tell visitors who ask us where to go.

A quick history of Mill Street

Grass Valley exploded into existence after gold was discovered in the area in the 1850s. The town quickly became one of the wealthiest gold mining centers in California. Mill Street is named for the lumber mills built along it to support the booming mining operations, which needed enormous amounts of timber for shafts and infrastructure.

The brick buildings you see today were mostly built between 1860 and 1900, after a series of fires forced the town to rebuild in fireproof masonry. Many of the buildings still have their original facades and ironwork. Walking down Mill Street, you are walking through a streetscape that has changed remarkably little in over a century.

The City of Grass Valley completed a Mill Street transformation project in recent years, with widened sidewalks, more shade trees, and lighting improvements. The street is now even more comfortable to walk than it was a decade ago.

Where to park

Several options. There is street parking on Mill Street and the cross streets, with most spots free or low-cost during the day. The public lot off Bank Street, two blocks down, has more spaces and is rarely full except during major events. The Holbrooke Hotel block also has parking nearby.

During Cornish Christmas weekends in December and other major events, parking fills up. Arrive early or be prepared to walk a few extra blocks. Locals park on the side streets and walk in.

Where to start

We recommend starting at the south end of Mill Street, near Main Street, and walking north. The street is roughly four blocks of dense shopping and dining, then transitions into more residential and mixed-use blocks. A leisurely visit takes two to three hours. A serious visit with stops for food and a few hours of browsing takes a full afternoon.

What to expect along the way

Mill Street has a mix of business types. We will describe categories rather than name specific businesses because the lineup changes year to year. Some businesses have been here for decades. Others rotate through. Both are part of the character.

Food and coffee

Several cafes, restaurants, and bakeries on or near Mill Street. The downtown area also has Cornish pasties at Marshall's Pasties (203 Mill Street), which is a nod to the Cornish miners who shaped Grass Valley in the gold rush era. Many of the early miners came from Cornwall in England, and the pasty tradition came with them.

There is a local bakery scene worth exploring. There are several coffee shops where locals camp out for hours with laptops. There are sit-down restaurants for dinner, a few breweries, and casual lunch options.

Shopping

Mill Street has a strong concentration of independent shops. Vintage and antique stores. Art galleries, including a long-running artists co-op gallery. Clothing boutiques. Specialty stores like a kitchen shop with cooking classes. And, of course, our shop, Crystal Empire Gems, at 139 Mill Street.

Booktown, just off Mill Street on Bank Street, is worth a stop for any book lover. It is a co-operative of independent booksellers in 4,000 square feet of used and rare books.

Galleries and culture

Art Works Gallery and other downtown galleries feature local artists working in many media. The Center for the Arts a few blocks away hosts concerts, theater, and community events. Grass Valley has a surprisingly active arts community for a town of this size, partly because the region has attracted artists from the Bay Area for decades.

Historical landmarks

The downtown area is full of historical markers and plaques noting the original use of various buildings. The Holbrooke Hotel, just off Main Street, dates from 1862 and has hosted Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, and other 19th-century notables. The Del Oro Theatre on Mill Street is a beautiful Art Deco movie house from the 1940s, still showing films.

Seasonal events on Mill Street

Several annual events draw people to Mill Street.

Cornish Christmas (Friday evenings in December)

Mill Street closes to vehicle traffic on Friday evenings in December for a series of holiday street festivals. Vendors, music, food, hot drinks, and the lighting of the town Christmas tree. Cornish Christmas is one of the most-attended events in the region and has been a local tradition for decades.

Summer street events

Various summer evenings include music in the streets, sidewalk sales, and community gatherings. Check the Grass Valley Downtown Association website or social media for current schedules.

Holiday tree lighting and parade

Usually in early December. The downtown core fills with families and visitors. Mill Street is at the center of it.

Beyond Mill Street

Once you have walked Mill Street, the rest of downtown Grass Valley is worth exploring. Main Street, Bank Street, and Neal Street all have shops and restaurants. Empire Mine State Historic Park is a short drive and is one of the must-see attractions in Nevada County. Our weekend itinerary for Grass Valley covers more of the region.

Practical tips

  • The street is walkable but slopes slightly. Comfortable shoes help.
  • Most shops open by 10am. Some open later on Sundays.
  • Restaurants fill up on weekend evenings. Reservations help for dinner.
  • Cash is accepted everywhere but cards work universally too.
  • Weather varies. Summers are warm, winters are cool with occasional snow. Spring and fall are ideal.
  • Bring a tote bag if you plan to buy from multiple shops.

Come visit

If you are walking down Mill Street and pass 139, please stop in and say hi. We will tell you about the rest of the street, the shop, the stones, or whatever you want to talk about. The shop is calm and there is no pressure. Our door is open.

Pace yourself

A practical note from years of watching visitors. The most common mistake people make on a Mill Street visit is trying to do it too fast. Mill Street rewards slowness. The shops do not announce themselves loudly. The interesting things happen when you slow down enough to notice the sign you would have walked past, the small gallery you almost missed, the side street with a cafe you would not have found in a rush. Plan a longer visit than you think you need. Let the rhythm of the town set the pace.

Most of our regular customers say the same thing about their first visit. They came for an hour and stayed for four. They meant to grab a coffee and ended up having dinner downtown. The town does this. It is part of why people who visit once tend to come back.
