The Best Crystal Shop in Grass Valley: What to Expect at Crystal Empire Gems

If you have searched for a crystal shop in Grass Valley and ended up here, hi. We are Crystal Empire Gems, and we have been on Mill Street since October 2015. We are James and Deborah Hill. Our two boys are named Azurite and Malachite. We sell minerals, crystals, and gemstones from around the world. We make handmade jewelry. We host classes, tarot readings, and sound healing. This page tells you what to expect when you visit.

Where to find us

Crystal Empire Gems is at 139 Mill Street, Grass Valley, California, 95945. Mill Street is the main pedestrian shopping street of historic downtown Grass Valley, between Bank Street and Neal Street. There is street parking and a public lot two blocks down. The shop is wheelchair accessible from the front.

Our phone is (530) 615-4234. Our email is CrystalEmpireGems@gmail.com. We are open seven days a week. Sunday through Thursday we are open from 10 to 6. Friday and Saturday we stay open until 7. We are closed on a few major holidays. If you are coming from far away, give us a call to confirm.

What we sell

Three things, in three roughly equal parts.

Minerals, crystals, and gemstones

Ethically sourced from around the world. We carry everything from small tumbled pocket stones to large display-grade geodes. Common pieces include amethyst, rose quartz, clear quartz, smoky quartz, citrine, rhodochrosite, labradorite, obsidian, and many more. We rotate stock constantly. You will see something on a visit you did not see the time before.

Handmade jewelry

James makes the silver and wire-wrapped jewelry in our case. He is a working silversmith, not a brand mascot. Pendants, rings, earrings, and one-off pieces set with stones we trust. Custom and made-to-order work is available. If you bring in a stone you already own, he can wrap or set it for you.

Metaphysical goods

Sage and smudging supplies. Books, including regional gem trail guides and beginner-friendly mineral identification books. A small, carefully picked selection of cards, candles, and ritual items. We do not stock the gift-shop overflow of crystal-aesthetic merch. If we sell it, it is because we use it ourselves or our customers ask for it by name.

What our shop feels like

Most first-time visitors say two things. One: it is bigger inside than it looks from the street. Two: it is calm. We are not a bright, loud retail space. The lighting is warm. There is often a sound bowl playing softly. Deborah will probably greet you. There is no pressure to buy. You can spend ten minutes or two hours.

We get a wide mix of people. Lifelong rock and mineral collectors who know more about provenance than we do. People who came in because they liked the window. Tourists in town for Cornish Christmas or a weekend getaway. Locals who stop by every few weeks just to see what is new. Energy workers buying for a practice. Parents buying a first crystal for a curious kid. All of them are welcome. None of them are made to feel out of place.

Classes, tarot, and sound healing

Our shop is also a small experiential hub. Three offerings run on a regular schedule. Saturday tarot readings happen in-store starting at 1pm. Sunday tarot with Kellie Taylor, also known as Laughing Lady Love, runs from 1 to 5pm in front of the shop. And Sound Healing and Movement on Mill happens every fourth Sunday of the month from 9 to 11am, with rotating yoga and sound instructors. Drop in. No experience needed.

How we are different from other shops

Grass Valley and Nevada City have a small handful of shops that overlap with us. We are friendly with most of them. Nevada City Crystal and Glass, Inner Path, Loot and Lore, Sue's Crystals and Rocks down on Hughes Road. We all serve different corners of the same community. Here is what is specific to us.

We make our jewelry in house. Most shops in this category resell pieces from wholesale catalogs. James is the maker. That means if you want a piece set with a stone you brought in, that is a conversation you can have at the counter.

We say where stones come from. We will tell you the country and often the specific mine of a piece. If we do not know, we will say so. We have a longer piece on this blog about what ethically sourced actually means.

We honor both buyers. The science-leaning rock collector and the energy-leaning crystal user get the same respect at our counter. We do not gatekeep either side. We will not roll our eyes at you for asking about properties. We will also not lecture you about them.

We have been here ten years. Mill Street has changed several times in that stretch. We have not moved. Our two kids have grown up running through the shop. There is something to be said for that kind of continuity.

If you are visiting Grass Valley for the day

Mill Street is walkable. Combine us with a coffee at one of the cafes a block down, lunch at a downtown restaurant, and an afternoon of browsing the rest of the historic district. Our full Mill Street walking guide and our weekend itinerary cover the rest. Grass Valley is also a great base for short drives into the Sierra foothills if you want to combine a stop with a hike or a gold-country day.

What people say

Our Yelp rating is 5.0 stars across our reviews. Our Facebook page sits at 100 percent recommended. The most common notes from customers are: Deborah is warm and patient, the selection is excellent, the prices are fair, and the shop is genuinely calming. Some people say they came in for one thing and stayed an hour. We hear that a lot.

Come visit

If you are local to Grass Valley or Nevada County, come say hi. If you are visiting from Sacramento, the Bay Area, Reno, or anywhere in the Sierra foothills, we are an easy stop. We are at 139 Mill Street, Grass Valley, California. (530) 615-4234. Sunday through Thursday 10 to 6, Friday and Saturday 10 to 7.

Bring a friend. Bring a kid. Bring nothing but curiosity. We will be here.

Tips for your first visit

If you have never been in a crystal shop before, here is what most first-timers tell us they wish they had known. You do not have to buy anything. You can browse for an hour. You can pick up pieces and hold them. Most stones are not behind glass. The ones that are will be brought out for you if you ask.

Bring questions. We get asked everything from highly technical mineralogy to how to give a crystal as a gift for a friend with a new baby. There is no wrong question. We have heard most of them at least twice. If something catches your eye and you do not know what it is, ask. Half the joy of a shop like ours is the small stories that come with each piece.

Take your time with stones. Hold them in both hands. Set them down. Pick up the next one. Many people are surprised that one piece in a group of ten will quietly insist on being the one. There is no rush. The shop is not going anywhere. Neither are we.

Our main site is crystalempiregems.com. Most of our work is best seen in person, but feel free to call or email if you are looking for something specific and we will help.

Do you take walk-in jewelry repair or custom work?

Yes. Walk in and ask for James. For larger custom pieces, a phone call ahead helps.

Do you appraise crystals or rocks people bring in?

We are happy to talk about a piece, but we are not certified gemologists and we do not give formal appraisals.
