Moonstone: From Sri Lanka to Your Hand

Moonstone is one of those stones that does not photograph well. You see a picture online and think it looks pretty. Then you pick one up in person and the inside of the stone seems to glow with a soft blue light that moves as you tilt it. That is the moment most people decide they want one. It is hard to forget.

We are James and Deborah, and we have run Crystal Empire Gems in Grass Valley, California since 2015. We carry tumbled moonstone, polished cabochons, rough specimens, and a steady rotation of moonstone pendants made by James in our jewelry case. This is the long guide for anyone curious about what they are looking at.

What moonstone actually is

Moonstone is a variety of feldspar, specifically a potassium feldspar called orthoclase. Feldspar is one of the most common mineral groups on earth. It makes up roughly 60 percent of the planet's crust. Most feldspar is unremarkable to look at. What makes moonstone special is a property called adularescence, which is the soft, floating blue or white light that moves across the surface.

The shimmer comes from the internal structure. Moonstone is made of alternating microscopic layers of two different feldspars, orthoclase and albite. Light passing through these thin layers scatters and produces the glow. The effect is similar to how a soap bubble shows shifting color. It is geometry, not pigment.

Moonstone sits at Mohs 6 to 6.5 on the hardness scale. That is softer than quartz. It can be worn in jewelry but needs more care than rose quartz or amethyst. Rings worn daily will eventually show wear. Pendants and earrings hold up well.

Where the best moonstone comes from

Sri Lanka is the classic source. Moonstone has been mined there for centuries, and the highest grade material, with the strongest blue adularescence on a near-colorless background, still comes from Sri Lankan mines. These pieces are often called blue moonstone or Ceylon moonstone in the trade.

India produces large quantities of moonstone, including the type called rainbow moonstone. Despite the name, rainbow moonstone is actually a different feldspar called labradorite that shows similar flash. Most of the affordable moonstone in shops is rainbow moonstone from India or Madagascar.

Other sources include Myanmar, Tanzania, Brazil, Madagascar, and a few American deposits in Virginia, North Carolina, and New Mexico. Each region produces slightly different character. Some lean cool blue. Some lean warm peach. Some show a strong cat's-eye effect when cut as a cabochon.

When we buy moonstone, we ask for origin. Most of our Sri Lankan material comes through established Sri Lankan dealers we have worked with for years. Our piece on what ethically sourced crystals actually means covers the broader supply chain.

How people have used moonstone across cultures

Moonstone is one of the oldest gemstones in the human story. Roman writers describe it as the solidified light of the moon. Hindu tradition treats it as a sacred stone, and moonstone has long been associated with the Indian moon deity Chandra. In medieval Europe, travelers carried moonstone as a protective charm. Across many cultures, the through-line is the moon, intuition, and journeys.

Sailors carried moonstone for safe travel by sea. New mothers wore moonstone for nurture and care. The Art Nouveau jewelers of the late 1800s used moonstone heavily, especially in the work of Rene Lalique. Many antique moonstone pieces from this era still circulate.

How people use moonstone now

Modern crystal practice tends to associate moonstone with new beginnings, intuition, and cycles. The full moon is often the time people choose to bring out their moonstone pieces. Our guide on crystals for new beginnings covers this family in more detail.

We do not make medical or fertility claims about moonstone or any stone. We will not say a stone changes hormones, regulates cycles, or eases any physical condition. What we will say is that people have associated moonstone with cycles and rhythms for thousands of years, and many of our customers find it a useful focus stone for moments of transition. The stone does not do the work. It reminds you that you are doing the work.

Moonstone as a June birthstone

Moonstone is one of the three modern birthstones for June, alongside pearl and alexandrite. If you are buying a June birthday gift, moonstone is often the most affordable and the most distinctive of the three. Our full guide to birthstones by month covers all twelve. June is also one of our most common custom-jewelry months at the shop.

Buying moonstone: what to look for

Adularescence is the first thing. Tilt the stone in good light. The blue or white glow should move as you move the piece. A flat, dead stone with no movement is lower grade. A piece that flashes from corner to corner is high grade.

Body color is the second thing. The classic Sri Lankan moonstone has an almost colorless body with the blue floating inside. Cheaper material has a milky or yellowish body. Peach moonstone has a warm body color, and rainbow moonstone shows multiple colors. All are valid. Just know what you are buying.

Clarity matters too. Moonstone has natural inclusions called centipedes, which look like small parallel lines. These are normal and do not lower value much. Cracks running across the stone do lower value.

Origin affects price. Top-grade Sri Lankan moonstone with strong blue is the most expensive. Indian rainbow moonstone is the most affordable. American moonstone is rare and prized by collectors.

Caring for moonstone

Moonstone is softer than quartz, so it needs more care. You can rinse it briefly in cool water. Avoid long soaks, harsh cleaners, and ultrasonic machines. Store it away from harder stones in a soft pouch or a lined box. Our guide on how to store your crystals has the full list.

For cleansing, the gentle methods work best. Moonlight is the obvious choice and the traditional one. Smoke is safe. Selenite contact is safe. Avoid salt water and avoid prolonged sun. Moonstone does not fade dramatically, but the body can dull in strong sun over time.

Moonstone in jewelry

Moonstone is one of James's favorite stones to set. The soft glow works with both sterling silver and warm copper wire. He prefers bezel settings for ring stones because moonstone is too soft for prong settings in daily-wear rings. Pendants and earrings handle most setting styles. If you have an inherited moonstone you want set, bring it in. He will work with what you have.

Pairing moonstone with other stones

Many of our customers pair moonstone with labradorite because the two feldspars share a similar flash but offer different moods. Moonstone is soft and bright. Labradorite is dramatic and dark. Together they make a balanced pair. Rose quartz is another common partner for the heart and self-care side of moonstone's traditional use. Clear quartz is sometimes added when a piece is meant for focused work. None of these pairings are required. A single piece of moonstone does the same work most people use it for.

Quick FAQ

What is the difference between moonstone and rainbow moonstone?

Moonstone is a potassium feldspar called orthoclase. Rainbow moonstone is technically a labradorite with similar flash. Both are commonly sold as moonstone.

Is moonstone good for daily wear?

In pendants and earrings, yes. Rings worn daily will show wear because moonstone is softer than most ring stones.

Why does moonstone glow?

Internal microscopic layers scatter light, producing the soft blue or white shimmer called adularescence.

Can moonstone get wet?

Briefly, yes. Avoid long soaks. Pat dry after rinsing.
