Hematite: Heavy, Reflective, Grounding
Hematite is the stone that surprises you in the hand. You pick up a piece expecting a normal mineral weight and it is heavier than it should be. Dense, cool, almost metallic. The polished surface reflects like a mirror. The color is so dark gray it can pass for black, but if you scratch it on a ceramic tile, the streak is blood red. That is where the name comes from. Hema is Greek for blood.

What hematite actually is
Hematite is iron oxide, written as Fe2O3. It is one of the main iron ores mined for industrial use, and it has been an important mineral for human civilization for thousands of years. The same rock that gets refined into steel sits in our display case in polished forms.
The metallic gray-to-black appearance can fool people into thinking hematite is a magnetic or metallic mineral. It is not magnetic in its natural form, although a heavily processed or heated version can be slightly magnetic. The mirror-like polish is one of the defining features.
Hematite sits at Mohs 5.5 to 6.5 on the hardness scale. That is harder than glass but softer than quartz. It is hard enough for jewelry and survives daily wear in beads and pendants. The density is the surprising part. Hematite is about five times heavier than an equivalent volume of water, which is much denser than most other gem-grade minerals.
Where hematite comes from
Hematite is one of the most common iron ores on the planet, so it occurs almost everywhere there has been significant iron-rich rock activity. Brazil, Australia, and Venezuela produce huge industrial quantities. Smaller, gem-grade deposits come from Morocco, England, and the American Lake Superior region in Minnesota and Michigan.
There is one more source worth mentioning. Hematite is also present on Mars. NASA's rovers have found extensive hematite deposits across the Martian surface, including the small spheres called blueberries that the Opportunity rover photographed. The red color of Mars comes largely from oxidized iron. Mars is, in a sense, the largest hematite deposit in the solar system.
Magnetic hematite versus natural hematite
This is an important note. Most magnetic hematite on the market is not natural hematite. It is a synthetic material called hematine or magnetic hematite, made from iron oxide compressed and magnetized in a kiln. Natural hematite has very weak magnetic properties at best. The strong magnetic hematite beads sold for bracelets are synthetic.
Synthetic hematite is not inferior in every way. It is consistent, beautiful, and inexpensive. But it is not natural hematite. Honest sellers should label it as hematine or magnetic synthetic hematite. If a piece is strongly magnetic, it is almost certainly synthetic.
How people have used hematite across history
Hematite has one of the longest histories of any mineral. Ground hematite is the source of red ochre, which has been used as a pigment for at least 70,000 years. Ancient burial sites across the world contain bodies dusted with red ochre, suggesting deep symbolic meaning across early human cultures. Hematite pigment shows up in cave paintings around the world.
Egyptian, Roman, and Greek civilizations used polished hematite for mirrors, signet rings, and ceremonial pieces. Medieval European folklore associated the stone with blood, courage, and protection in battle. Some of this came from the red streak. Some came from the iron content, which was understood in some traditions as connected to vitality and life force.
How people use hematite now

We do not make medical claims about hematite. The iron-related folklore should not be read as a medical claim. Hematite does not affect blood iron levels or any physiological function. What we will say is that the stone has been used for grounding for as long as it has been collected, that the weight in the hand is itself a quiet anchoring sensation, and that many of our customers find a hematite piece useful as a desk stone or a pocket carry.
Buying hematite: what to look for
Type first. Decide if you want natural or synthetic. Natural hematite is what we usually carry. The natural pieces have a slightly less uniform finish and are not strongly magnetic. Synthetic hematine has a perfect mirror finish and is strongly magnetic. Both are real stones in their categories. Just know what you are buying.
Polish second. Hematite is at its best when the surface is fully polished to a mirror. Tumbled hematite that has lost its shine looks gray and dull. A good polished piece almost looks like wet silver.
Shape third. Natural hematite can form in plates, rosettes, and crystal clusters. The flower-like specimens, sometimes called hematite roses, are particularly prized. Iron rose hematite from Brazil is a striking specimen form.
Origin. Ask. Brazilian and Moroccan are the most common high-quality natural sources.
Caring for hematite
Natural hematite handles water reasonably well, but extended water exposure can rust the surface over time. Brief rinses are fine. Avoid soaking. Avoid humid storage. Our guide on cleansing crystals covers safe methods. Smoke, sound, and selenite contact are all safe.
Synthetic hematine can also rust if poorly sealed, but most commercial pieces are coated to prevent this. Either way, store hematite in a dry location away from acid contact.
Hematite in jewelry
Hematite makes excellent daily-wear jewelry. The hardness is fine for rings, pendants, and beads. The mirror surface holds up well to ordinary wear. James occasionally sets hematite in pendants. Hematite beads are common for bracelets because the weight in a string of beads is genuinely satisfying. Just be aware that a hematite ring worn daily will pick up small scratches over time.
Pairing hematite with other stones
Hematite is often paired with black tourmaline and smoky quartz for a full grounding combination. Many practitioners add clear quartz to amplify or selenite for cleansing. For people who want a grounding pendant for daily wear, the combination of hematite with a small piece of black tourmaline is a popular request. The pairings are personal. A single hematite piece does most of what people want from the stone.
